John regularly plays and records a wide range of musical styles, including Modern ‘Cool’ Jazz, Dixieland and New Orleans, Motown and Classical.
He runs and plays in many Big Bands, and also in a smaller unit, recreating the Dance Band era of the 1950s.
He has worked on many tours and festivals. He has recorded numerous CDs, advertising, and title music for television (for example: the Noel Edmonds show Deal or No Deal). He plays with the poetry/jazz group ‘Nightdiver’, enhancing and developing the musical implications of poetry.

He teaches in schools and privately, both individually and in groups, and frequently enters students for the Associated Board and Trinity College examinations, using the standard syllabus, besides specializing in the jazz options. He has been teaching improvisation for many years, in many musical genres, and often uses Sibelius, Cubase and Band in a Box software with his students.
